Robert E. McGinnis (geb. 1926) ist als Illustrator vor allem bei Filmfans bekannt, denn in den Sechzigern und Siebzigern illustrierte er neben vielen Romancovern vorrangig Plakate für Filme, darunter etwa "Breakfast at Tiffanies", "Barbarella", "The Odd Couple" (Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau) und diverse James Bond-Filme wie "Thunderball", You only Live Twice", "Live and Let Die" u.a.Dieses Buch von Titan Books aus dem Jahr 2014 im Format 24 x 32 cm mit 176 Seiten und Schutzumschlag zeigt aber, dass er sehr vielseitig tätig war. Auffallend ist seine Vorliebe bzw sein Talent zur Darstellung wunderschöner Frauen, meist spärlich bis gar nicht bekleidet. Aber er kann auch Landschaften, Portraits (sieht man besonders gut am Filmplakat von "Comes a Horseman"), Western Settings, historische Szenen oder Arbeiten für Galerien und Museen. Sein Stil reicht von hyperrealistisch bis überkandidelt karikierend. Das Buch legt den Schwerpunkt auf die Kunst selbst, aber ein bißchen was zu lesen (natürlich auf amerikanisch) gibt es auch in ihm. Das einzige was man vermisst ist ein biografischer Teil. Wenigstens ein einziges Foto von ihm selbst wäre nett gewesen, aber das hätte sich wohl mit dem Konzept des Buches gebissen. Trotzdem bin ich schwer begeistert von dieser Veröffentlichung.
Bis vor nicht allzu langer Zeit war mir der Name Robert McGinnis nicht bekannt, wohl aber seine Bilder und Illustrationen. Seine Art, schöne und elegante Frauen zu porträtieren, ist aber nur eine Seite seines Schaffens. Diese Buch gibt einen guten Überblick über sein Werk, ich kann es daher nur empfehlen.
Neben Fritz Wyllis und Ellgreen einer der sichersten Illustratoren des "Pin-up-Zeitalters". Mitunter am Rande verträglicher Nudität. Doch als Grafiker und Plakatist in der Figur höchste Perfektion.
